How to add a contractor or guest user to MS Teams

Follow these instructions to add a contractor or guest user to Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft (MS) Teams is a collaboration tool for groups to create content and share the information they need to work together. The tool is operated by Microsoft as part of their MS 365 suite. MS Teams enables users across the University to connect via instant messaging, video conferencing, online meetings, and simultaneously work on a document in real-time together.

For more information on MS Teams, please visit the Microsoft Teams service overview or the UBCO IT Guide to Using MS Teams at UBC.

Requirements:

For the best experience, the contractor or guest user should associate their email address with a Microsoft account. They can register for a free account here and associate it with their existing email account:

Note: This step is only required by the contractor or guest user if they do not have a firstname.lastname@ubc.ca or cwl@student.ubc.ca email address.

Add a contractor or guest to a Team:

Sometimes you'll want to collaborate with people who aren't part of UBC or might not be eligible for a FASmail account.

Guest experience in Teams:

The guest experience and permissions in MS Teams are restricted for licensing and security reasons. Learn more about the differences here.
