How to Print Adobe Protected PDFs

Adobe PDFs can have certain protection to make them only viewable (and printable) from Adobe Acrobat. Sometimes this will make it so the printer is unable to print these files. Here are the steps to resolve this:

  1. Log into a campus workstation (desktop) and download the file onto that computer.
  2. Open the file in Adobe Acrobat (File -> Open With -> Adobe Acrobat Reader)
  3. If the printer is not able to print the file (i.e.. It’s only one page that says something like “Open in Adobe Acrobat to view this file”), hit CTRL+P/Print again but choose “Microsoft Print to PDF” as the printer/destination. This will create a copy of the PDF without the Adobe protection.
  4. Name the file and save it, and then print that file (the newly created pdf, not the original).
