How do I fix Cisco Anyconnect failure in Windows 8/8.1?

Cisco Anyconnect will not launch in Windows 8/8.1

Symptoms :

When trying to start Cisco Anyconnect in Windows 8/8.1, an error message appears that says it failed to initialize the connection subsystem.

  Resolution:

 1. Find the Cisco Anyconnect install folder (by default it will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Cisco\Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client

 2. Right click on vpnui and choose properties. Go to the compatibility tab and switch setting to run as Windows 7

 3. Restart machine and software should run properly.

Cause:

 Windows patch in Feb 2015 changed the way IE flags a live internet connection. This is a flag used by Cisco Anyconnect to detect whether it is online.

If this does not resolve issues, the Service Desk can do further troubleshooting on UBC owned machines.
